Are Supplements Worth the Hype?

It seems like every day, there’s a new supplement that promises to change our lives. From boosting immunity to enhancing energy, supplements are marketed as shortcuts to better health. But with so many options, it’s hard to know what’s helpful and what’s just hype. Let’s take a closer look at supplements and explore a few that really do make a difference—starting with one of the big ones: Vitamin D!

Are Supplements Helpful?

The truth is, some supplements are helpful—especially if we’re not getting enough nutrients from our diet or lifestyle. For example, vitamin deficiencies can happen when we don’t get enough sunlight, don’t eat a balanced diet, or have specific health conditions. Supplements can be a simple way to fill these gaps. But supplements aren’t magic pills; they work best when combined with healthy eating, good sleep, and regular movement.

Why Vitamin D Matters

Vitamin D is one supplement that’s essential for overall health, especially for our bones, mood, and immune function. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to a range of health issues, from feeling tired and moody to decreased bone strength and even increased risk of illness.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is crucial for strong bones, and it also supports immune function, helping us fight off illnesses. It even impacts mood and mental clarity, making it important for mental health as well as physical wellness.

How to Get More Vitamin D Naturally ??

While supplements can be helpful, the best way to get more vitamin D is to let nature do its thing! Here’s how:

  1. Get Outside for Sun Exposure: Our bodies make vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Aim for 10-30 minutes of midday sun a few times a week (depending on skin tone and climate). Just remember sunscreen if you’re going to be out longer!
  2. Add Vitamin D-Rich Foods to Your Diet: Certain foods are naturally high in vitamin D, like fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), egg yolks, and fortified foods (such as milk and orange juice). Adding these to your diet can give your vitamin D levels a boost.
  3. Consider a Supplement: Vitamin D3 with K2 (for better absorption) is one that I firmly believe is important year-round, but especially in those months that we aren't getting out in the sun as frequently. Just talk with a healthcare provider to make sure you’re taking the right amount. Here's a link to the one I recommend. https://us.fullscript.com/plans/bmeirav1724875350-vitamin-d

So, Supplements: Helpful or Hype?

Some supplements, like vitamin D, can be genuinely beneficial, especially if it’s tough to get enough from food and sunlight alone. However, no supplement can replace a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Supplements are meant to supplement—not substitute—good health habits.

So next time you’re browsing the supplement aisle, remember to focus on essentials and consult with a professional to see what’s best for you. Here’s to feeling strong, energized, and informed about what we put in our bodies!

Stay healthy and fabulous!
