Hydration: Why and How

I just hung up with a client that was telling me how much she HATES water. Hate is such a strong word I had to use all caps. I actually hear this statement quite a bit. Initially I was surprised. Personally, I always carry a water bottle with me. I even just got a nifty cross-body to carry my refillable! I thought perhaps I should address the challenge of getting proper hydration. First, let me just touch on the "why".

The body averages 60% water. It varies throughout our lives, but know that it can range 50-75%. That's quite a bit. Water is leaving our bodies throughout the day and night so it's key to keep replenishing.

Poop! Without water, our poop can't move through our bodies. Digestion stalls. Constipation happens. Toxins build up. Water helps break down the food you eat so your body can absorb the nutrients.

Cognitive function. Feeling foggy? Memory, mood, attention to detail...all of these are impacted when you are dehydrated.

Weight management. Often we think we are hungry when we are really just thirsty. Water can help fill you up and reduce your appetite. Drinking a glass of water before a meal will help you eat less.

So now that we have discussed the "why" let's focus on the "how". There are several different ways to get proper hydration in aside from just a classic glass of water.

1.Make it fancy

I love to pretend I am at a spa and make a huge pitcher of water with mint and cucumbers or with sliced pineapples. It dresses up the water and can make it more refreshing and let's face it...less boring.

2.Set a goal

Sometimes just seeing yourself get closer to your goal is motivating enough. Buy one of those water bottles that counts down. You will know exactly how much you have had as it counts down from morning until night. Let's shoot for 8 glasses a day. If you workout then add on please.

3.Eat your water

Any fruits and vegetables that are made up of at least 80% water will work. Watermelon, celery, cucumbers, bell peppers, strawberries, lettuce (romaine is best), asparagus are all excellent choices.

4.Drink alternatives

Care for a little bubbly? Perhaps it's the carbonation you are craving. Pump up your water with a Soda Stream or just go ahead and buy some Perrier.  Drink some tea. Herbal teas like chamomile, nettle or hibiscus are a delicious, relaxing and enjoyable way to hydrate.

Time to drink up and feel revitalized!
