Healthy Snacking for Both You and Your Kids

Healthier Snacks

Clients ask me regularly not only what I eat but also what I feed my kids. If you read my blog you know that my 19 year old son is off at school and hopefully making healthy choices on his own at this point (I like to believe I taught him well.) I do have a high school freshman still at home (Go Sharks!).

I have slowly over the years been transitioning her from processed quick grab snacks to healthier options. That's not to say she doesn't grab a bag of pretzels or Goldfish to take to school. I do the best I can for those easy school snack options. When she comes home though, I do focus more on whole fruit, healthy fats and good proteins.

After School Healthy Snacks

  • Banana with nut butter (I sprinkle flaxseed on there too for extra fiber)
  • Hard boiled eggs - They are a great source of protein; very energizing prior to heading off to sports. (I hard boil a half dozen at the beginning of each week).
  • Piece of cheese - My daughter loves those Baby Bels.
  • Greek yogurt - I buy plain whole milk and then drizzle with honey. I add flax or chia to this as well. Top it with some fresh berries and it's perfectly delicious and nutritious.
  • Fruit - Put down the juice and reach for a piece of fresh fruit. My daughter is picky but happens to love strawberries so I stock up!
  • Baked apple - There is nothing like a crisp, raw apple, but drizzle with honey and cinnamon and bake it and its a delicious dessert or afternoon snack that seems more decadent than it is.
  • Whole grain toast smeared with avocado or nut butter - YUM!
  • I love those crunchy mini cucumbers! Sometimes you just need a good crunch. They are also perfect for dipping in hummus or make a guacamole with that previously mentioned avocado.
  • Another great crunch would be sliced bell peppers. I love the sweet red ones.

Prep some of these snacks on Sundays for both you and the kids. You want something that will be a quick, easy grab that isn't processed garbage.

Welcome back to the school and happy snacking!
